Canique Smartmeter Sense - Wireless battery powered smart meter interface
Canique Smartmeter Sense is a battery-operated device that can read the consumption data from your smart meter via an infrared reading head. The consumption data is then transmitted wirelessly to a base station.
You can view the data in any browser or integrate the MQTT data into another system.
You need a base station (Pico Gateway or Raspberry Pi HAT) as well as an infrared adapter to operate this device.
Quick Facts:
You need a base station (Pico Gateway or Raspberry Pi HAT) as well as an infrared adapter to operate this device.
Quick Facts:
- 15 seconds measuring/sending interval (default)
- 5 years battery life with a single AA size battery
- No power connection required near your smart meter
- 868 MHz radio: better range than WiFi
- Transmission of current consumption (watts), total consumption (watt hours), current feed-in (watts), total feed-in (watt hours)
- Identify power-hungry consumers in your household
- Conditionally charging an electric car, batteries, etc. to achieve zero feed-in with a solar system
- Determine whether a flat is in active use
- Create daily billing of electricity consumption
- Billing/measuring the feed-in from a solar power system
Supported smart meters
Currently, as of August 2024, Canique Smartmeter Sense can decode and decrypt data from 3 Smartmeter models.
- ISKRAEMECO AM550
- SIEMENS IM350
- Landis+Gyr E450
Cryptographique: 256 Bit Security
Canique Smartmeter Sense encrypts data with a symmetric 256 bit AEAD cipher before sending it. The cipher used is state of the art: Chacha20-Poly1305. This way you can always be sure that the data has not been tampered with, is authentic and has not been decrypted by some other party.
Furthermore there are countermeasures implemented against replay attacks.
Automatique: Automatic Gain Control
Canique Smartmeter Sense adjusts its transmission power automatically depending on the distance to the base station.
Every transmitted sensor information is acknowledged by the base station, and if necessary re-transmitted by Canique Smartmeter Sense.

Battery status monitoring
Battery status is measured with 1mV resolution every hour. You know when the battery voltage gets critical even before the battery knows it.
